How it all started

Once upon a time.....

Artportunity Knocks was started in a small two-bedroom apartment with two students from the neighborhood who had an interest in keeping the arts positive. The founders hosted bible studies and then music and art sessions, using their own resources, time, money, food and energy.

Six short months later, after trying to fit almost 40 kids in their small apartment, they realized that what they had was fulfilling a need in the community and in 2007, Artportunity Knocks was born.

FOUR PILLARS GOVERN ARTPORTUNITY KNOCKS

Picture
Artportunity Knocks is governed by four pillars. These pillars were created to hold up the mission of the organization and keep the organization focused on meeting its core values. The pillars are: The Arts, Education, Community Service, Bridging Cultures. Through each pillar, the organization is able to serve a segment of the community that may or not be consider underprivileged, but is definitely underserved. The pillars are explained below...
Positive Arts - We believe that music and arts should be kept "clean" and positive by omitting lyrics that uses profane words, violence, drug/sex promotion, and degradation to any minority or majority group. We believe the arts should be inspiring, uplifting, and used to provoke positive behaviors.

Education - We believe that educators should include the arts in their Core Subjects through a model called Arts Integration. We also believe that creative and innovative learning is the key to unlocking the minds of student with learning challenges and can be the key to graduating high school on time. This teaching and learning method will ensure that students with varying learning styles will have the opportunity to experience the motto of "Learning is Fun!"

Community Service - We believe that positive arts should be used in the community to spark hope and positive change. We also believe in a wholistic approach to youth development by providing our students with essential needs such as nutritious meals during programming, school supplies, and parent engagement nights.

Bridging Cultures through the Vehicle of the Arts - Artportunity Knocks strongly believes that unity between cultures can be bridged through the vehicles of Music and the Arts. Therefore, Artportunity Knocks classes, programs, and events are designed to include diverse genres, cultural arts, education and awareness of the varying cultures represented in the community they serve.

In between these pillars is Love, Compassion and Hope
